Chapter Seven
"THE harder Tom tried to fasten his mind on his book, the more his ideas wandered."
It seems Tom has problems with that same old distracting voice we all have once and awhile. Text to real life connection there!
Then we have the kiss. Tom and Becky's first kiss was their own sacred engagement bond. It was cute, sweet and followed by tears. Of course Tom is clueless as to why there are tears.
Chapter Eight:
I made a huge connection with Tom while he was dreaming of being a pirate. Growing up in South Louisiana I lived on Lafite Street. Jean Lafite was a famous pirate and I'd watch kids play pirate endlessly. While I never had career aspirations to become a pirate, I can remember wanting to be one. What fun, sailing the seas, exploring new places; it just sounds like way too much fun.
We also find that Tom is rather superstitious. I love how Twain makes this character so complex. If you think about younger boys, Tom's superstitious beliefs seem so normal.
Finally we see the boys playing "Robin Hood." That's an obvious text to text connection, but I can't help but wonder if we're seeing some foreshadowing.
More tomorrow.
